SOUTHBANK CENTRE EXHIBITION // MIKE NELSON
Mike Nelson’s artworks are based on architecture and space. His installation pieces typically create a fictional world by collecting and reconfiguring existing objects and materials.
His works explore themes such as space, time, and memory and strongly impact the sensory and perceptual experiences of the audience.
His works combine mixed media with installation art as the primary medium, including sculpture, photography, painting, and sound elements. Through the different media, his artworks boost our visual, hearing, and olfactory senses, allowing us to feel as though we have entered a fictional and realistic space as soon as we enter the exhibition hall.

Mike Nelson’s artworks create imaginative and exploratory spaces by reconstructing and combining different objects and materials. These spaces can sometimes appear mysterious and chaotic, or the feeling of calm and serene.
His works can inspire people to think about and explore space, time, and identity and consider the boundaries and relationships between reality and fiction. The different objects and materials used in his works can also inspire people to think about the value and meaning of the material.
Furthermore, Mike Nelson’s works are often interactive and participatory, so the audience can freely roam and explore his exhibition. It can bring about deeper experiences and feelings to the audience.

What inspires me from this exhibition is seeing how the artists created the spaces by using the objects, colours, the sounds of the material when they hit, their smells, and the layout of the spaces.
What does the designer try to tell people? And how do people feel after entering this space?
I really enjoy this exhibition, especially “The Deliverance and the Patience”. The artists connect many small spaces together. Each room has a different interior design, making people feel a sense of wonder and confusion when moving through the space.
